The E-Bay song is an example of how much the E-Bay phenomenon has become integrated into our society. A mere 12 years ago, no one had heard of the concept, indeed a dozen years ago, E-Bay did not even exist. Now it is a multi-billion dollar yearly business and expanding. People in 20+ countries have E-Bay or E-Bay international presence.

Seriously, how many businesses can you think of that have a song written about them? Many businesses have commercial jingles, but the E-Bay song is about E-Bay. Granted, the E-Bay song is written and performed by Weird Al Yankovic, an artist who has made a career by parodying everything from bologna to the Beverly Hillbillies.

What is amazing is that the lyrics of the song are just the things that E-Bay is all about. Used junk, bubble wrap, used Kleenex from celebrities, memorabilia from old television shows-it all appears in the E-Bay Song.

Weird Al also manages to work in some of the controversial or unusual aspects of E-Bay into the E-Bay Song in a cohesive manner. For example the song refers to E-Bay sniping-the practice of placing a bid in the last open seconds of the auction in order to win the bid.

Another once-over lightly lyric speaks of Pez dispensers. A long-believed fable about the history of E-Bay has Pierre Omidyar, the originator of the E-Bay site building the site so his then fianc?e could have a place to market her collection of Pez Dispensers. A public relations type invented the story and it has no basis in fact.

A number of celebrities are mentioned in the E-Bay Song with assorted memorabilia associated with the person. Farrah Fawcett posters, a Dukes of Hazard Ashtray, an Alf alarm clock, Shatner's toupee are all part of the lyrics of the E-Bay song. Oh, and don't forget the Kleenex used by Dr Dre.

Then there is the assorted junk-a pink bathrobe, a toaster, a package of tube socks, and a snow globe. The E-Bay Song brings back all kinds of memories and pokes fun at them as well. For all the fun such a song brings, it has a serious side as well. It describes to a T the whole concept of E-Bay

The E-Bay Song could well be a classic someday-Weird Al is certainly not a one-shot wonder with his comedic songs. Perhaps the CD's of the song can soon be bought on E-Bay
